If you are running into a grinding sound when the printer homes or tries to start a print, this is likely caused by a faulty limit switch. Limit switches tell the printer to stop moving when they hit an edge, and if they aren't working, the printer will continue attempting to move in that direction, causing a loud grinding noise.
If this is happening at the beginning of a print or when you click "Home" then it's likely the limit switch inside the extruder assembly. That switch is located on the extruder circuit board and lines up with the opening in the white housing. To resolve this issue, replace that circuit board with a new one following these instructions:
You'll need a screwdriver, Allen wrench, needle nose pliers, and wire-clippers.
The process should take about 10-15 minutes.
- Unload filament.
- Power off the printer.
- Remove the clear lid (push up until it snaps out of place).
- Carefully pull out the ribbon cable.
- Push down on the filament tube push-fit connector and pull up on the filament tube.
- Unscrew the screw on the top of the white housing.
- Lift to remove.
- Remove the two black screws holding the circuit board in place.
- Using needle nose pliers, remove all wires going into the circuit board, carefully to only pull by the plastic pieces and not the wires themselves.
- Replace with the new board and reassemble.
